Drones Take Flight at Massive First Responder Training Event

In a unique twist, Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes, known for hosting the massive country music festival WE Fest, became the site of an extensive drone training event for area First Responders on Wednesday, June 5. According to InForum, more than a dozen agencies from across northwest Minnesota gathered to practice their drone skills through various emergency scenarios.

Drones Prove Invaluable for Emergency Response

The training showcased the versatility of drones in emergency situations. Some drones are equipped with heat signature detection capabilities, making them crucial tools for fighting fires and locating missing persons. Importantly, drones also help keep first responders out of harm’s way.

MNDOT Director of Public Engagement Bryan Christensen highlighted the potential for drones in hostage situations, stating, “If there’s a hostage, law enforcement can use them (drones). They can fly the smaller drones to investigate without putting people at harm’s risk.”

Historically, drones have played a significant role in various emergency scenarios. For instance, the U.S. Forest Service has deployed drones to combat wildfires in Mississippi, providing “eyes in the sky” that help manage the fires more effectively and safely. Additionally, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras have been used to detect hot spots in wildfires, allowing Firefighters to target areas that need immediate attention.

Leveling the Playing Field for Smaller Departments

Drone Technology is particularly beneficial for smaller departments in rural areas that often have limited resources. The training event provided an opportunity for these agencies to learn best practices from entities with established drone programs.

“That really helps the smaller agencies, and then also learning the best practices from other entities that have already established their drone programs,” Christensen said.

Training Persists Despite Windy Conditions

Originally rescheduled due to weather, the training event proceeded on June 5 despite windy conditions that can sometimes interfere with drone operations. Despite the challenges, the training was successfully completed without any hitches.
