Washoe County, Nevada is taking to the skies with drones to tackle mosquito infestations in hard-to-reach wetlands, aiming to reduce the spread of diseases like the West Nile virus.
New Aerial Assault on Mosquitoes
In a bid to control the mosquito population, Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) is reportedly set to launch its first mosquito treatment of the year on May 16. Traditionally conducted by helicopter, this year’s effort includes an innovative addition: drones. These unmanned aerial vehicles will target wetlands and other mosquito-prone areas in the North Valleys, Spanish Springs, and South Reno.
Environmentally-Friendly Approach
The treatment employs a granular product, applied via small pellets rather than a liquid spray. This product specifically targets mosquito larvae, preventing them from maturing into adults capable of spreading diseases such as the West Nile virus (WNV). WNV is a serious illness that can lead to symptoms ranging from headaches and high fever to paralysis and even death.
Drones to the Rescue
NNPH staff have spent over a year preparing for the drone program, securing necessary approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other relevant bodies. The drones will be used in areas difficult for helicopters to access, ensuring a comprehensive approach to mosquito control. The same environmentally-friendly product used in helicopter treatments will be deployed by the drones.
“Drones offer a precise and efficient method to reach mosquito habitats that are otherwise challenging to treat,” an NNPH spokesperson said.

It’s important to note that drones will be used strictly in wetlands and other areas where mosquitoes breed, not near residential or commercial buildings. This targeted approach minimizes disruption while maximizing the impact on mosquito populations.
