The Ocean Race, the premier around-the-world sailing competition, has been capturing breathtaking footage of the teams battling it out on the high seas using camera drones. The aerial perspectives provided by the drones offer a whole new vantage point to appreciate the power, speed and beauty of these cutting-edge racing yachts as they navigate some of the most challenging ocean conditions on the planet.
Hand-catching drones on the high seas!
Getting steady, cinematic shots while flying a drone from a moving boat is no easy feat. In the past, drone pilots relied on the DJI Phantom 4 which featured a sturdy, grippable body that allowed pilots to launch and handcatch the drone without needing a landing pad on the limited deck space of a sailboat.
However, Drone Technology has evolved and many pilots now favor the more compact and feature-rich DJI Mavic 2 or 3. While the sleek design of the Mavic 3 doesn’t include the same built-in grips, inventive pilots have solved this problem by 3D printing custom grips that attach to the drone’s body, allowing them to confidently handcatch it just like the Phantom 4.
Thanks to the skill of the drone operators and advancements in consumer drone capabilities, we can all share in the excitement of The Ocean Race like never before. The incredible footage they are capturing gives us an intimate look at the power of the wind, waves and weather – and the skill and tenacity of the sailing crews as they strive to be the first to complete this epic race around the world.
