Pyka and SNC Unveil Game-Changing Drone for U.S. Military Operations

Estimated read time 3 min read

In a significant advancement in Drone Technology, Pyka and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) have introduced a new, autonomous, all-electric drone tailored for the U.S. Department of Defense. The Pelican Cargo, described as the size of a school bus, is set to revolutionize how the military handles logistics in contested areas.

A Drone Like No Other

The Pelican Cargo stands out as the world’s largest zero-emission cargo aircraft. Measuring approximately 22 feet in length with a 38-foot wingspan, it can carry up to 400 pounds and has a cargo volume of 70 cubic feet. Its performance is impressive, capable of traveling up to 200 miles with a cruising speed between 60 and 70 knots. This UAS operates fully autonomously, powered by four electric motors and a triple-redundant battery system that can be recharged in just an hour or swapped in five minutes.

Designed for the Toughest Missions

According to Michael Bertman, vice president of programs at SNC, “Pyka’s Pelican Cargo is unlike any other UAS solution on the market for contested logistics.”

The drone’s capabilities make it significantly more versatile and capable than other current platforms. It features super-short takeoff and landing (SSTOL) capabilities, reportedly requiring only 500 feet of runway with a full payload, and it can even operate at night using GPS and advanced navigation systems.

Strategic Implications for Military Operations

One of the key advantages of the Pelican Cargo is its potential to simplify and secure military logistics, particularly in challenging and austere environments.

“Creating a more diverse, distributed, and survivable supply chain is expected to be the primary driver in terms of interest from the DOD,” Bertman explained.

The drone’s zero-fuel design minimizes the need for bulk fuel staging, which in turn reduces the logistical footprint traditionally required for resupply operations.

Pyka’s Expanding Influence and Future Prospects

Pyka is not just making waves with its innovations but is also expanding its physical footprint. The company recently secured a 110,000-square-foot facility in Alameda, California, which will serve as its new headquarters and production hub. Pyka’s growing relationship with AFWERX, the U.S. Air Force’s innovation arm, and its precommitments for over 80 Pelican Cargo drones, highlight the growing confidence in electric and autonomous aircraft technologies for military applications.

The collaboration between Pyka and SNC to bring the Pelican Cargo drone to the U.S. military signifies a leap forward in autonomous aviation technology. With its exceptional load capacity, range, and autonomous capabilities, the Pelican Cargo promises to enhance operational efficiencies and improve the safety of service members by transforming military logistics.

As Pyka prepares to scale up production, the defense community watches closely, anticipating the broad impact this technology will have on future military operations.
