FDNY Deploys Drones to Bolster Beach Safety in New York City

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) has expanded its drone program to provide crucial support to lifeguards at New York City beaches, as reported by Eyewitness News. This innovative approach combines cutting-edge technology with traditional rescue methods to enhance water safety.

Eyes in the Sky: Drones to the Rescue

FDNY’s robotics unit, typically used for firefighting, has joined a multi-agency Beach Task Force. Their drones now play a vital role in supporting the Parks Department’s lifeguards, who are facing high demand and staff shortages.

FDNY Acting Chief Of Department John Esposito explained, “We’ve been training with them, and we have pretty good communication with the lifeguards. So when they need the assistance, we’re there to help them.”

From Shark Spotting to Swimmer Safety

The drones were initially deployed last summer to spot sharks after a rare shark attack at Rockaway Beach. However, their utility quickly expanded to include locating distressed swimmers and guiding rescue efforts.

In a recent incident, FDNY drones assisted in rescuing five swimmers caught in a rip current.

FDNY firefighter Kevin O’Malley described the situation: “There’s a rip current that we’re always aware of that exists on Beach 91st Street. Unfortunately, it took some people out with the rip and then the tide pushed them onto the rocks.”

Advanced Rescue Capabilities

The FDNY’s drone program has evolved to include direct intervention in rescues. The drones can now drop a flotation device called a “Rest tube” that deploys upon hitting the water. This innovation provides crucial support to swimmers in distress until lifeguards can reach them.

To maintain readiness, the FDNY conducts rescue drills twice weekly, even in challenging weather conditions.

“It’s pretty real world, dangerous conditions. But we were able to exercise it and get our guys in good practice,” Esposito noted.

Addressing Multiple Beach Emergencies

The drones’ versatility was demonstrated during a busy beach day that included several emergencies.

Esposito recounted, “We had a missing child. There was a fear that that child was in the water. It took a little bit to understand that. EMS was treating an unconscious patient on the beach. Further to the east, we had a shark sighting.”
