Good day, folks! Shawn here from Air Photography. Today, we’re conducting a range test with the DJI Neo, addressing a common question from my channel viewers about its range capabilities.
Range Specifications
The DJI Neo offers a range of 10 km using the O4 transmission system when paired with a controller like the DJI RC-N3 or DJI RC2 (which I’ll be using today) or when using FPV gear. However, when flying with just your phone connected, you’ll have a basic Wi-Fi connection with limited range.
Considerations for the Test
Battery Life
The Neo’s battery life is decent for its size:
- 17 minutes with prop guards
- 18 minutes without prop guards (my current setup)
We’ll monitor the battery closely during the test.
Wind Conditions
The Neo has a Level 4 wind rating, performing reasonably well in windy conditions. Today, we have just a light breeze, which should be manageable.
Legal Considerations
As a Canadian resident, I can legally conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) tests with sub-250g drones like the Neo, as long as it’s done safely. Always check your local regulations before attempting similar tests.
The DJI Neo Range Test
Let’s get the DJI Neo drone in the air and see what it can do. I’ll keep it in normal mode and maintain a moderate altitude. We’ll use the screen recording and video features to showcase the video quality during the flight.
Initial Flight
- At 370 m: Impressive distance for a 135g drone
- Weak image transmission signal detected
- Increased altitude to 85 m, improving signal strength
- Passed 500 m mark
Pushing the Limits
- Aiming for 1 km distance
- Battery at 69%, planning to return at 60%
- Successfully reached 1 km
Return Flight
Initiated return to home feature, utilizing the AR home point for guidance. Lowered the drone’s altitude for the return journey.
Neo’s Capabilities and Value
The DJI Neo, priced at $199, offers impressive features:
- Autonomous flight from your palm
- Traditional controller-based flight
- FPV capabilities with DJI Goggles 3 and FPV Controller 3
- Full manual mode option
Video Quality Discussion
While I may have been enthusiastic in my initial Review, the Neo’s video quality is commendable for its price point. It outperforms some pricier competitors, making it an excellent choice for vloggers, social media content creators, and casual users capturing family events or vacations.
Landing and Final Thoughts
The drone returned safely with 34% battery remaining. We could have pushed it further, but safety is paramount. Achieving a 1 km range with this compact drone is impressive, especially considering the forested environment it navigated through.
In conclusion, the DJI Neo proves to be an incredible little drone, offering great value for its price point and capabilities.
Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one!
