The new drone, called the Responder, is set to transform how Police and fire departments handle 911 calls by providing rapid, autonomous aerial support.

World’s First Purpose-Built 911 Response Drone

The Responder is the first-ever drone specifically designed for 911 responses. It integrates with 911 systems, computer-aided dispatch, and other essential emergency tools. When a 911 call is made, the drone can launch, fly at up to 60 mph, and arrive on the scene in under a minute. It can deliver lifesaving equipment like Narcan or EpiPens and provide live thermal imaging to First Responders.

Simplifying Public Safety with Integrated Solutions

Historically, creating a drone-based emergency response system has been complex, involving multiple vendors and various pieces of software. Resnick explains that the Responder drone simplifies this by offering an all-in-one solution—hardware, software, regulatory support, installation, and maintenance. “This is the first solution that’s really end-to-end,” he says.

The Birth of Brinc Drones: Inspired by Tragedy

Resnick’s inspiration for Brinc Drones stemmed from the October 1 shooting in Las Vegas. He was compelled to create technology that could assist in public safety after learning how the shooter had set up a baby monitor camera to anticipate first responders. This led to the development of Brinc’s first drones, aimed at giving first responders better situational awareness in dangerous scenarios.

Responder Drone: Advanced Features and Specifications

The Responder boasts several advanced features inherited from Brinc’s previous drones. It has a 42-minute flight time, multiple onboard sensors, obstacle avoidance systems, and robust autonomy software. It also features a 640 thermal imager, optical zoom cameras, red and blue lights, and a siren, making it a comprehensive emergency response tool.

Creating an outdoor drone like the Responder presented new challenges, such as ensuring long flight times and dealing with regulatory requirements. Resnick and his team set up a dedicated test site to fine-tune the drone’s performance. They also partnered with Echodyne for ground-based radar to enhance the drone’s detect-and-avoid capabilities.

The Responder can be deployed from docks on the roofs of police and fire stations, ensuring rapid response times. It uses a mesh networking system and can integrate with Starlink for extended range capabilities. In areas with challenging terrain, additional repeater sites can be set up to maintain coverage.
