Skydio X10 Drone Unveils New Features in Latest Software Update

Estimated read time 3 min read

Skydio, a US-based drone manufacturer, has recently released a software update for its X10 drone model. The update introduces several exciting features and improvements, including a new sensor package, an indoor capture mode, and enhancements to video quality and flight controls. This article will explore these updates in detail, focusing on the role drones play in the story.

VT300-L Sensor Package

The most significant addition to the Skydio X10 is the VT300-L sensor package. This package includes a FLIR Boson+ radiometric module, a 50 MP 1″ wide module, a 64 MP narrow module, and an LED flashlight. The VT300-L is particularly useful for mapping structures and conducting inspections in low-light environments. The 50 MP 1″ camera’s wide field of view allows users to capture structures from a short standoff distance, making it an excellent choice for indoor capture.

Indoor Capture Mode

Skydio has introduced a new 3D scan mode called “Indoor Capture,” specifically designed for autonomously scanning large, complex indoor environments. This feature is now available for the Skydio X10 and allows users to leverage various sensor packages to perform indoor captures. It is important to note that 3D Scan, which now includes Indoor Capture, is available as a separate software purchase.

Video Quality Enhancements

The software update also includes several video quality enhancements. The X10’s video quality has been improved when using the vehicle’s 5G cellular connection, which applies to flights over 5G cellular and live streaming. Additionally, the direct connection between the X10 controller and the vehicle has been improved to reduce noise and enhance video performance.

Improved Positioning and Flight Controls

Skydio has introduced VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry) and GPS indicators in the telemetry bar, informing the operator which positioning system the X10 is actively using and its overall health. If VIO and GPS become unreliable, the X10 enters attitude mode (ATT), relying on the drone’s barometer to maintain altitude. The controls in attitude mode have been made much smoother with this software release.

The update also allows users to disable automatic landing if there are no joystick inputs after 5 seconds. Additionally, on-screen tracking indicators now adjust to the scale of the target, with the tracking bounding box appearing in yellow with a black border.

Emergency Landing Cancellation

A new feature in the software update is the ability to cancel all landings associated with emergency states. Previously, if the drone initiated an automated landing due to low battery or a similar state, users did not have the option to cancel the landing. Now, if the drone begins landing automatically, users can press the stop button to cancel the landing. However, Skydio warns that canceling an automated landing is done at the user’s own risk.

The latest software update for the Skydio X10 drone introduces a range of new features and improvements that enhance its capabilities and user experience. The VT300-L sensor package and Indoor Capture mode expand the drone’s applications in mapping, inspections, and 3D modeling. The video quality enhancements and improved flight controls make the X10 more reliable and easier to operate. With the ability to cancel emergency landings, users now have more control over their flights. These updates demonstrate Skydio’s commitment to continuously improving its drones and providing cutting-edge technology to its customers.
