In a recent video, Adam Bry, CEO and founder of Skydio, provided an update on the company’s progress and the growing impact of drones in public safety. While the update highlighted the potential benefits of Skydio’s drones, it also raised important questions about the company’s controversial lobbying efforts aimed at pushing Chinese drone maker DJI out of the United States market.

Drones Revolutionizing Law Enforcement

Bry emphasized the increasing scale and scope of drone deployments in public safety, with agencies like the Las Vegas Metro Police Department and NYPD leveraging Skydio drones for patrol and first response. He also showcased upcoming accessories and features that will enhance the capabilities of Skydio’s drones, such as the Spotlight accessory for low-light visibility and a speaker and microphone accessory for bidirectional communication.

Streamlined Live Streaming and Enhanced Situational Awareness

Skydio is improving live streaming with ReadyLink, making it easier for pilots to share live feeds instantly with their team. The company has also invested in integrations, bringing geospatial data from other systems into Skydio Cloud for enhanced situational awareness. Bry highlighted the side-by-side view with a 3D map oriented to the drone’s camera perspective as one of the most exciting features developed by Skydio’s team.

The Importance of Autonomy and Integrated Solutions

Bry emphasized the importance of autonomy and tightly integrated hardware and software for successful drone first responder (DFR) programs. Skydio’s commitment to autonomy and designing drones, docks, software, connectivity, and management to work seamlessly together sets them apart, Bry said.

Controversial Lobbying Efforts Raise Concerns

Despite the potential benefits of Skydio’s drones in public safety, the company’s controversial lobbying efforts aimed at pushing DJI out of the U.S. market have raised concerns among First Responders. Skydio has been accused of spending significant resources to influence legislation that would restrict or outright ban DJI drones, and thus severely limit competition and innovation in the market.

Banning DJI drones in the United States would ultimately harm the very first responders, Search and Rescue crews, police, and fire departments that Skydio aims to serve, as they would be left with fewer options and forced to purchase or lease Skydio’s significantly more expensive drones.

As more agencies adopt Drone Technology, it is crucial to ensure a level playing field that encourages competition, innovation, and the development of the best possible solutions for public safety. The Drone Industry thrives on competition and innovation, and any attempts to stifle these forces through lobbying and legislation should be met with skepticism and scrutiny.

DroneXL’s Take

Skydio’s update showcases the potential benefits of drones in public safety, but their lobbying efforts to push DJI out of the U.S. market raise concerns about the impact on the drone industry. While Skydio’s focus on autonomy and integrated solutions is commendable, it is crucial to ensure that the adoption of drone technology in public safety is driven by the genuine needs of first responders and communities, rather than the commercial interests of a single company and its investors.

As we move forward, advocating for policies that promote fair competition, transparency, and the development of the best solutions for public safety is essential. Only by fostering a diverse and innovative drone industry can we fully realize the potential of this technology to save lives and protect communities.
