Louisville Police Department (LMPD) has launched a new initiative to incorporate Drone Technology into their policing efforts. Announced by LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, this pilot program aims to enhance public safety by addressing issues such as missing persons, street racing, and water rescues. The program’s budget is reportedly approximately $100,000, with funds coming from both LMPD’s existing budget and metro council funds.
A Bold Step Towards Modern Policing
On Thursday, LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel unveiled the department’s new drone initiative. Designed as a “pilot version,” the program represents a significant move towards leveraging technology to improve safety in Louisville. The initial cost is estimated to be around $100,000, with about $52,000 sourced from LMPD’s budget and the remaining $48,000 funded by metro council.

The introduction of drones into LMPD’s operations aims to tackle several public safety challenges. Chief Gwinn-Villaroel highlighted that the drones would be instrumental in handling cases of missing persons, monitoring illegal street racing, and conducting water rescues. He stated, “We don’t want to misuse this technology. This technology is great. It’s not a track and seek. It’s not a surveillance type thing. It’s more of an intelligence gathering thing from our side. It gives us the tools to be able to identify what’s going on.”
Expanding the Fleet and Training Pilots
As part of the initiative, LMPD plans to purchase additional drones and train more pilots to operate them. This expansion is expected to enhance the department’s capabilities and ensure that officers are well-prepared to utilize this technology effectively.
