Reuters reports that this innovative approach is necessary to keep up with the blistering speeds of up to 50 mph (80 kph) reached by the kiteboarders.

Traditionally, Olympic sailing judges operate from speed boats, using a flag system to signal penalties. However, the extreme speeds of kiteboarding have forced a shift in strategy. Now, some officials are stationed on shore, relying on live drone footage to make split-second decisions.

Two drones, piloted from boats, provide a bird’s eye view of the action. This aerial perspective is crucial for jury members to determine if any rules have been broken during the race. A drone coordinator in the race officials’ booth manages the operation, directing the pilots to capture key moments of the competition.
“Get ready for the mark rounding,” the coordinator was heard saying as kiteboarders approached a buoy during Friday’s men’s semi-finals.
