DJI RS 4 Mini Firmware Update v1.2 Brings Improved ActiveTrack and New Sleep Mode Functionality

Estimated read time 4 min read

DJI is consistently updating its best-selling RS 4 Mini gimbal with a major Firmware Update that priorities core user experience enhancements and more advanced tracking features.

Recent firmware version v01.02.00.00 adds a sequence of useful features that boost workflow efficiency alongside improved gimbal performance in difficult shooting scenarios.

The RS 4 Mini has emerged as a favorite among content creators looking for professional-grade stabilization in a more compact body. Featuring a 4.4-pound payload and 13-hour battery life, the slimline gimbal has become a favorite among videographers working with mirrorless cameras and smartphones.

The latest revision demonstrates DJI’s commitment to continuous user experience enhancements through software updates.

Enhanced ActiveTrack Performance at Extreme Angles

The highlight of this firmware update is all about major enhancements to the ActiveTrack feature, especially when you’re shooting from high or low camera angles. This enhancement is actually the solution to the prevalent issue of most content creators who require stable subject tracking with dynamic camera movements and unconventional shooting angles.

The enhanced ActiveTrack performance produces more stable and accurate subject tracking, even with the gimbal in extreme positions previously that caused issues for the tracking algorithms. It is a valuable feature for content creators shooting cinematic content that requires silky smooth tracking shots from high or low angles. The enhanced reliability of the tracking saves time by reducing the number of retakes and offers more creative freedom during shooting.

Coupled with the DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module, which supports up to 10 meters of tracking distance and performs well in difficult multi-person environments, these ActiveTrack upgrades make the RS 4 Mini an even more practical solution for solo content creators and professional videographers alike.

Power Management and Connectivity Options Simplified

The firmware update adds two operational features that bring daily convenience. It is now possible to enter sleep mode through a double click of the power button, with the three axes automatically locking during the action. We had this function on the RS3 and RS3 Pro gimbals.

This addition greatly simplifies the process of transitioning from active recording to storage, as creators can now lock down their gear without manually having to work axes.

Also included in the update is direct Bluetooth resetting in the gimbal itself. This eliminates the aggravation of connectivity issues that previously required more complex troubleshooting steps. On-demand resetting of Bluetooth connections provides easier integration with the DJI Ronin app and reduces workflow interruptions in the midst of critical shots.

These power management enhancements augment the RS 4 Mini’s already-present automatic axis locks that release on power-on and engage on power-off or sleep. Combined, these provide an easier user experience from setup through storage.

Installation and Compatibility Notes

The firmware update v1.2 is downloadable through the DJI Ronin app via Bluetooth. The user should have the most recent version of the DJI Ronin app (V1.9.0 for iOS and Android) on their device prior to updating. It requires the DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module firmware V01.00.01.56 to be installed for full compatibility. Key concerns for installation include preserving the Bluetooth connection during updating the process and safeguarding any connected camera gear, since motors are disconnected during firmware upgrades.

Motor parameters reset to default after upgrading, and a user needs to do auto-calibration in order to be at optimal performance. The DJI RS 4 Mini also maintains horizontal and vertical shooting modes with its instant 10-second orientation switch feature.

The gimbal remains supported by popular camera combinations such as Sony A7 series mirrorless cameras with 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lenses, as well as vlog cameras like the Sony ZV series. This firmware update solidifies the RS 4 Mini as a feature-rich tool for content creators requiring professional stabilization features without the weight of larger gimbal systems.

The ActiveTrack performance boost and UI refinements make it all the more appealing to both indie producers and commercial shooters looking for dependable, portable stabilization tools.
