Why you don´t need a DJI Matrice 400, but still you are going to buy one

Estimated read time 7 min read

The Monster has landed! DJI has just unleashed what can only be described as the ultimate enterprise drone flex: the DJI Matrice 400. Released on June 10, 2025, this isn’t your typical consumer quadcopter that struggles with a light breeze. This is a 21.3 lb flying fortress that laughs in the face of weather patterns and casually carries more payload than some people’s luggage on international flights. Specially after walking through the duty free store.

Flight Performance: Because 59 Minutes Wasn’t Long Enough… Actually, It Kind of Is

The Numbers That Make Other Drones Cry

The Matrice 400 boasts an absolutely ridiculous 59-minute flight time with payload, making it the marathon runner of the drone world. (And outside too: my wife would love that I lasted for 59 minutes!) For comparison, this beast can stay airborne longer than most people can maintain focus during a Zoom meeting. When hovering (because sometimes you just need to contemplate life from 400 feet up), it manages 53 minutes of stationary flight.

Key Performance Specs:

  • Maximum flight time: 59 minutes (forward flight with payload)
  • Hovering time: 53 minutes
  • Maximum speed: 25 m/s (56 mph) – faster than your moped, slower than a Cheetah
  • Operating temperature: -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F)
  • Weather rating: IP55 (dust and water resistant)

Payload Capacity: The Flying Pack Mule

Seven Payloads Walk Into a Drone…

Here’s where things get genuinely absurd: the Matrice 400 can carry up to 7 payloads simultaneously with a maximum weight of 6kg (13.2 lbs). This is more than double the Matrice 350’s payload capacity. It’s like DJI asked themselves, “What if we made a drone that could carry everything but the kitchen sink?” and then probably figured out a way to mount the kitchen sink too.

Compatible Payloads Include:

  • Zenmuse H30 Series: All-weather multi-sensor payload
  • Zenmuse L2: LiDAR mapping system
  • Zenmuse P1: Full-frame photogrammetry camera
  • Zenmuse S1: Spotlight (because dramatic lighting is important)
  • Zenmuse V1: Loudspeaker (for when you need to yell at people from the sky)
  • Manifold 3: Onboard computer with 100 TOPS processing power

Obstacle Avoidance: Power-Line-Level Paranoia

The Matrice 400 features what DJI calls “power-line-level obstacle sensing”, which is essentially the drone equivalent of having severe anxiety about everything in its path. The system combines rotating LiDAR, mmWave radar, and low-light fisheye vision sensors to detect obstacles as thin as power lines, even at night.

Peculiar Feature Alert: The drone can detect and avoid 12mm wires in complete darkness. This level of paranoid precision means the Matrice 400 is probably more aware of its surroundings than most humans driving to work in the morning. Or me when I wrote this articles real early in the morning.

The obstacle avoidance system works at speeds up to 25 m/s, which is impressive considering most people can’t avoid obstacles while walking and texting simultaneously.

Video Transmission: Because 40km Range Isn’t Overkill At All

Broadcasting Your Business to the Next County

The Matrice 400 features O4 Enterprise Enhanced Video Transmission capable of reaching 40km range with its ten-antenna system. For those keeping track, this means you could theoretically pilot this drone from one city to another, though your local aviation authority might have some strong opinions about that.

Even More Ridiculous: The drone supports Airborne Relay Video Transmission, meaning you can use one Matrice 400 as a relay for another Matrice 400. It’s like having a drone buddy system, except your buddy costs more than a luxury car.

The Ship Landing Feature: Maritime Madness

Perhaps the most wonderfully over-engineered feature is the ship-based auto-landing capability. The Matrice 400 can recognize custom landing markers on vessel decks and execute dynamic landings on moving ships.

One of his most impressive features. If they implement this one on smaller drones, the amount of fail videos of pilots losing their drones while landing in boats will go down.

While most drone pilots struggle to land accurately on a stationary helipad in their backyard, DJI decided to create a drone that can land on a rocking boat in the middle of the ocean. It’s the aerial equivalent of parking a car while riding a roller coaster.

Smart Features: AI That’s Smarter Than Your Average Bear

The Matrice 400 includes Smart Detection that can identify people, vehicles, and boats even in thermal mode. The AR Projection feature displays real-time information about buildings, landmarks, and detected power lines directly on the controller screen.

Particularly Amusing Feature: The Power Line AR creates “an easily recognizable display” when power lines are detected. Because apparently, regular obstacle avoidance wasn’t dramatic enough – now your drone needs to highlight potential death traps with augmented reality graphics.

TB100: The Battery That Never Quits

The Matrice 400 uses a single TB100 battery with specifications that border on the ridiculous:

  • Capacity: 20,254 mAh
  • Voltage: 48.23V
  • Energy: 977 Wh
  • Cycle life: 400 charge cycles
  • Weight: 10.4 lb / 4.72kg

Fun Fact: This battery has a 244% capacity increase compared to the Matrice 350’s battery. It’s like DJI took the concept of “bigger is better” and applied it with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Hot-Swap Capability with a Twist

The drone supports 45-second hot-swapping thanks to an internal backup battery that keeps the avionics powered during battery changes. However, the controller will display a “breaking communication” message during the swap, because even DJI’s engineers couldn’t completely eliminate the anxiety of mid-flight battery changes.

The Cost of Flying Excellence… or Your Wallet’s Worst Nightmare

While DJI maintains their tradition of enterprise pricing opacity, early reports suggest the Matrice 400 will retail between $11,000 and $25,000. With the full loadout that will be the equivalent of buying 125 DJI Neo or a 2025 0-mile Subaru Impreza.

Perspective Check: This drone costs more than many people’s cars, but hey, can your car fly for 59 minutes while carrying seven different sensors and landing on moving ships? I didn’t think so.

The British Weather Test

During real-world testing, the drone’s IP55 rating was put to the test in typical British weather conditions. The Matrice 400 reportedly performed admirably, proving that it can handle elements that would send lesser drones running for cover.

The Prankster Potential

One particularly entertaining test involved using the Zenmuse V1 speaker to prank cyclists into thinking they were riding through restricted areas. The reactions were described as “absolutely priceless,” and the speaker performed excellently even in windy coastal conditions. This confirms that the Matrice 400 isn’t just a serious enterprise tool – it’s also perfect for elaborate practical jokes.

The Verdict: Engineering Excess at Its Finest

The DJI Matrice 400 represents what happens when engineers are given unlimited coffee, unrestricted budgets, and a mandate to make the most capable enterprise drone possible. It’s simultaneously the most practical and most absurd drone ever created – a flying contradiction that can perform serious industrial work while also being capable of landing on ships and pranking pedestrians.

Bottom Line: If you need a drone that can fly for nearly an hour, carry the equivalent of a small backpack’s worth of equipment, detect power lines in complete darkness, and execute precision landings on moving vessels, the Matrice 400 is your mechanical overlord. For everyone else, it’s a magnificent example of engineering showing off, and we’re absolutely here for it, so Santa, if you’re reading this article…

Whether this level of capability is necessary or simply DJI flexing their technological muscles is debatable. What’s not debatable is that the Matrice 400 has set a new standard for what “overkill” looks like in the Drone Industry – and honestly, the world is more interesting for it.
