Don’t sleep on GOOD Audio! Chasing Fast Cars with DJI Mic 2

Today, I want to share some impressions of one of my favorite devices that I’ve been using lately, the DJI Mic 2. Now, this microphone is not exactly new; it’s been on the market for the past couple of months now, but I’ve been gathering some thoughts and impressions, and I wanted to share them with you today.

DJI Mic 2 Test and Impressions

As a drone channel, it’s extremely important to get good audio, because we don’t have any audio from our drones. So, if you want to really immerse our viewers into the videos we make, especially the cinematic ones that we really put a lot of effort into, audio is extremely crucial to get that extra depth in our videos with the sound design. And because of that, we need good audio.
Now, of course, we can kind of get away from this problem by using sound effects from different royalty-free websites, but nothing beats the real thing, because it’s the most natural thing, and you know, the effort that you go into to record the audio yourself makes it worth it because then the audio matches the exact environment, the exact settings that you were in.
And of course, it adds a little bit more fidelity to your video. So for me, it’s always the preferred option, even though it requires a little bit more work, of course.

But all the audio that you heard from the beginning of this video in the intro, from the Nissan 370Z, was recorded on a DJI Mic 2.
Now, of course, it was not exactly perfect because I mistakenly had put the low-cut option to on, and that low-cut option has to be turned off because it kind of cuts off a few frequencies that, when you’re recording car sounds more specifically, they need to be there, and that also kind of muffles the audio a little bit. But that’s my bad; it’s not the microphone’s fault.

So next time I record something like this, I will make sure to turn off the low-cut feature because it will give me a little bit more dynamic audio that has a little bit more power to it, if I can say that.

Now, this microphone has been great for me, not only in a video like this that you saw in the intro but also in everyday scenarios where I want to capture some vlogging here and there, for example.

Now, this microphone has been the one that has been included in the Creator combo from the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. So if you have seen my video about the Osmo Pocket 3, you already know the fact that this microphone connects to your device automatically, and you can start recording straight away with great audio without having to tweak any settings, without having to even go into the menus.

It’s great; it’s just perfect for me to start going and start recording when I’m on the go, and have great audio automatically coming out of this device. So that’s perfect.

Now, this also connects to my DJI Osmo Action 4 wirelessly, which is great again because sometimes the Osmo Pocket 3 is not the ideal device to use the microphones on. Sometimes you want to have a little bit more action, for example, and for that, the DJI Action 4 is perfect, and you can still wirelessly connect this microphone to that. Not only for vlogging, but also like I said, for more action scenarios where you still want to capture good audio.

I think in every scenario, you want to capture good audio. Who wants that wind noise, and who wants to have, you know, poor audio? Nobody, I think, prefers that option. So having that peace of mind and ease of use from the DJI Mic 2 is great.
Now, the microphone itself, we have a box that contains not only the transmitter but another transmitter as well, and we have this receiver, which is a little bit better than the one we had on the DJI Mic 1.

So, it has a little bit bigger screen. We have a 1.1-inch screen, if I’m not mistaken, versus a 0.96-inch screen that we had on the DJI Mic 1.

So, it’s a little bit bigger, which makes it a little bit easier to see what’s going on, to see the battery levels, to see the audio levels, to see whether you’re connected or not, which channel you’re on, and so on.

So, it’s great to have that bigger screen. Now, another thing that I really appreciate about the DJI Mic 2 is the fact that we have these magnetic clips. So, you can easily attach this to your shirt, to your jacket, or whatever you’re wearing, and it stays there. It’s very secure; it doesn’t fall off, which is great.

And we also have a little bit of a different mounting option with this clip that we have on the back, so you can also put this on your belt, for example, or somewhere else where it’s more convenient for you. So, having that option is great. Now, the battery life on these is also quite good.

We have about 5.5 hours of battery life on the transmitters and about 5 hours on the receiver. So, it’s quite enough for a full day of shooting, I would say. Of course, if you’re going to be shooting for more than 5 hours straight, then you might need to think about charging them in between. But for the most part, I think this is quite enough.

And of course, they charge via USB-C, which is great because everything charges via USB-C nowadays, and it’s great to have that uniformity across all devices. So, in conclusion, I really like the DJI Mic 2. I think it’s a great option for not only drone pilots but also vloggers, YouTubers, and basically anyone who is looking for good audio. It’s very versatile; it’s very easy to use, and I think it’s a great option. So, if you’re in the market for a new microphone, definitely consider the DJI Mic 2. I think you won’t be disappointed.
