Drones Can Strike Deep into Russian Territory

A senior Russian airforce official has warned that Ukrainian drones have the capability to strike up to 1,553 miles into Russia. Dmitry Bogdanov, head of the radio-electronic warfare department of the Russian Aerospace Forces, stated that while measures have been taken to protect Moscow, a wide swath of Russian territory bordering Ukraine remains vulnerable to potential attacks, reports Reuters.

Russia Hit by Barrage of Drone Attacks

Since the start of the year, Russia has been hit by numerous drone attacks from Ukraine, targeting critical oil refining infrastructure. These attacks have shaken global markets, as Russia is the world’s second-largest crude exporter. While Ukraine does not officially confirm or deny its involvement, it maintains that such sites are legitimate targets as they aid Moscow’s military effort.

Deepest Attempted Drone Strike on Russian Territory

A Kyiv source reported that a Ukrainian drone targeted a Russian early-warning military radar system in the Orenburg region, some 932 miles away from the closest Ukrainian-held territory. If confirmed, this would be one of the deepest attempted drone strikes on Russian territory since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

Russia Bolsters Defenses Against Drone Attacks

In response to the increasing threat of drone attacks, Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that more measures are being implemented to protect the country’s energy infrastructure, including the installation of anti-drone nets at key facilities.

Moscow Targeted by Ukrainian Drones

Moscow itself has been attacked by Ukrainian drones several times since the start of what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine. In May last year, a major barrage saw two drones fly towards the Kremlin complex before being destroyed. The Kremlin accused Kyiv of attempting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin, an assertion that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy rejected.

DroneXL’s Take

The increasing range and effectiveness of Ukrainian drones highlight the evolving nature of modern warfare. As drones become more advanced and accessible, they offer smaller nations like Ukraine a means to strike at larger adversaries from a distance, potentially leveling the playing field to some extent. However, the use of drones also raises concerns about the potential for escalation and the risk of civilian casualties. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, it is likely that we will see further developments in Drone Technology and its application in military operations.
