A 74-year-old scout leader with Parkinson’s disease was found in a densely wooded area thanks to the use of a drone by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin. The incident, reported by WFRV, highlights the growing importance of Drone Technology in Search and Rescue operations.
The Disappearance
The Milwaukee man, serving as a scout leader at Long Lake Boy Scout Camp, was reported missing at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. He was last seen at a camp gathering on Saturday evening and did not have a cell phone with him.
Initial Search Efforts
Deputies began a ground search at 10:18 a.m., assisted by a K9 officer from the Fond du Lac Police Department. However, these initial efforts were unsuccessful in locating the missing man.
Drone Deployment
After the ground search failed, authorities turned to aerial technology:
“An aerial drone was then utilized to conduct a grid pattern search of the area in which the 74-year-old was last seen,” the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office stated.
Successful Recovery
The drone’s effectiveness was quickly demonstrated. At 10:55 a.m., less than 40 minutes after the search began, the missing man was located. He was found in a densely wooded area, approximately 160 yards from his cabin.
The scout leader had sustained minor injuries and was in a “confused state” when found. He was subsequently taken to St. Agnes Hospital for evaluation.
DroneXL’s Take
This incident underscores the vital role that drones play in modern search and rescue operations. The ability to quickly cover large areas and access difficult terrain makes drones an invaluable tool for First Responders. As we’ve seen in other recent search and rescue missions, drones are increasingly becoming standard equipment for law enforcement and emergency services. Their use in situations like this not only saves time but can be the difference between life and death in critical scenarios.
