DJI Air 3S Expected to Launch Soon
In a short 34-second video clip shared by Igor Bogdanov, better known as Quadro_News on Twitter, we see the DJI Air 3S drone flying outside DJI’s head offices in Shenzhen, China. This video hints at the imminent release of the DJI Air 3S, expected later this summer. Although the video doesn’t provide detailed information about the drone’s features and specs, it does reveal some significant changes.
Larger Gimbal and Camera Module
One of the most noticeable differences is the gimbal and camera module. The DJI Air 3S features a significantly larger gimbal and camera compared to the original DJI Air 3. The construction of the gimbal and camera module in relation to the drone’s body is reminiscent of the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, where the camera unit appears almost too large for the drone. This larger camera setup likely indicates enhancements in imaging capabilities, possibly offering higher resolution and better low-light performance.
Speculations About the New Sensor
The video doesn’t give much away about the drone’s other features, but there is a lot of speculation about the sensor located on the top front of the drone, above the camera. This sensor is rumored to significantly improve the DJI Air 3S’s obstacle avoidance and tracking capabilities. Some speculate that this might be a LiDAR sensor, which could provide precise distance measurement and detailed mapping of surroundings. LiDAR technology has become smaller and more affordable in recent years, and its integration into the DJI Air 3S could enhance autonomous flying and obstacle detection.
However, it’s important to note that the working range of LiDAR sensors is limited, especially when they are this small. Smaller LiDAR sensors typically have a shorter range and may not be as effective for long-distance applications. This means that while LiDAR could greatly improve close-range obstacle avoidance and tracking, it might not be as useful for long-distance photography or wide-angle landscape shots.
