The Christian County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois is set to enhance its capabilities with a new Thermal Drone, a DJI Matrice 30, thanks to a $10,000 grant from Norfolk Southern Corporation, as reported by Fox Illinois.
Grant Fuels Drone Acquisition
Norfolk Southern’s contribution comes from two community programs launched in 2023:
- The Safety First Grant Program
- The Thriving Communities Grant Program
These initiatives aim to advance safety and promote economic opportunity across the railroad’s 22-state network.
Training and Certification
Two deputies from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office will undergo specialized training to operate the new drone:
- Attend a 4-day, 32-hour Unmanned Air System Pilot Training
- Take the FAA license test to become certified drone pilots
Enhanced Capabilities
Chief Deputy Jim Baker, pictured receiving the check from Norfolk Southern Special Agent Eric Peden, highlighted the drone’s potential:
“The new thermal drone will definitely provide valuable support, especially in Search and Rescue operations, surveillance, and other critical tasks,” Baker stated.
DroneXL’s Take
The acquisition of this thermal DJI M30 drone by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office aligns with a growing trend in law enforcement using drones for search and rescue operations. This technology can significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of First Responders, especially in time-sensitive situations.
As we’ve seen in recent DroneXL articles, thermal drones are becoming increasingly crucial tools for public safety agencies. They offer unparalleled advantages in locating missing persons, assessing dangerous situations from a safe distance, and providing real-time aerial intelligence to ground teams.
This grant from Norfolk Southern demonstrates how public-private partnerships can contribute to community safety and technological advancement in law enforcement. It’s a positive step towards modernizing Police capabilities while potentially saving lives.
