China Showcases Military Drones at Major European Defense Expo

According to a recent report from the South China Morning Post, China’s largest arms contractor, North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco), displayed an array of military drones at Eurosatory, one of Europe’s biggest defense exhibitions. This move highlights China’s growing competitive edge in the military drone export market.

Spotlight on the Z-6B Unmanned Helicopter

One of the standout drones on display was the Z-6B, an unmanned helicopter system. Timothy Heath, a senior researcher at the Rand Corporation, described its capabilities:

“The Z-6B features many technological innovations compared to the original Z-6. In addition to being unmanned, it features improvements in stealth, advanced optical sensors, electromagnetic warfare, and attack capabilities.”

The Z-6B is designed for vertical takeoffs and landings, making it suitable for use on naval platforms like aircraft carriers and destroyers. Malcolm Davis, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, noted its similarity to the US MQ-8B Fire Scout, but with enhanced performance characteristics.

China’s Growing Drone Export Market

China has become a significant player in the military drone export market, particularly in developing Countries. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reports that China exported over 280 combat drones in the past decade, mainly to the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.

Mark Cozad, another Rand Corporation researcher, explained China’s competitive advantage:

“Western systems cost significantly more for both purchases but also in terms of operations and maintenance costs. For customers … the low cost is a critical factor.”

Impact of Drones in Modern Warfare

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has underscored the importance of drones in modern warfare. Maksym Zaporozhets from Ukrainian drone manufacturer Ukrspec Systems stated:

“This war shows that drones change everything … Now, Ukraine is producing FPV [first-person view] drones, medicines drones, [and] maritime drones.”

China’s Potential in the Global South

While Chinese military drones may face challenges in the European market due to political and technical constraints, experts believe they could find opportunities in the Global South. Lukas Fiala from the London School of Economics noted:

“With drones, one of the key focal points of the Russian war in Ukraine, there will be continued interest in such systems for the foreseeable future.”
