This morning, Chinese drone maker DJI released the DJI Dock 2, the DJI Matrice 3D, and the Matrice 3DT. The DJI Dock 2 and DJI Matrice 3D/T are only available in the Chinese market and, according to DJI’s Chinese website, will set you back $10,000. Originally we believed the new docking station would be called the DJI Dock Mini.
The new DJI Dock 2 is smaller than the original DJI Dock that was demonstrated during the DJI Airworks event in Las Vegas last year.
DJI Dock 2 Revolutionizes Remote Drone Operations
The DJI Dock 2 works in tandem with the DJI Matrice 3D and 3DT, drones that have been specifically designed to be launched from the docking station.
The DJI Dock 2 is capable of being used outside as it has an IP55 rating to deal with various weather conditions. The dock and drone combination has an operating range of 6 miles and features an environmental monitoring system.
Size-wise, the DJI Dock 2 is 75% smaller and, without the drone, weighs 68% less than its predecessor at 75 pounds.
The reduced weight and size make the DJI Dock 2 easier to relocate and use in different areas.
A built-in backup battery allows the DJI Dock 2 to remain operational for an additional 5 hours in the event of a power loss or while operating in a remote location.
To reduce the operating cost and maximize up-time, DJI has designed the DJI Dock 2 to have a six-month maintenance interval.
The DJI Matrice 3D and 3DT drones
Together with the DJI Dock 2, the Chinese drone maker released the DJI Matrice 3D and Matrice 3DT in China.
As we have seen in earlier photos, the DJI Matrice 3D/T drones have been specifically designed to work with the DJI Dock 2. For instance, unlike the DJI Mavic 3 series, these drones do not feature foldable arms and are instead designed so that they neatly fit into the dock’s landing zone.
The DJI Matrice 3D and Matrice 3DT feature omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, a maximum operating range of 6 miles, a 50-minute flight time with a battery rated for 400 cycles.
The drones have an RTK module built in to help with precision landing with an accuracy of slightly more than one inch on the DJI Dock 2.
- The DJI Matrice 3D drone features a wide-angle 4/3 CMOS 20MP sensor with a mechanical shutter and a 1/2″ CMOS telephoto 12MP sensor.
- The Matrice 3DT features a 1/1.32-inch CMOS 48MP sensor, the same 1/2″ CMOS telephoto 12MP sensor, and a 640×512 thermal camera.
These camera payloads seem to come directly from the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise and DJI Mavic Enterprise Thermal.
For the Chinese market only, DJI offers the DJI Dock 2 in two variations:
- The DJI Dock 2 with the DJI Matrice 3D for ¥69,999 ($9,613.66)
- The DJI Dock 2 with the DJI Matrice 3DT for ¥77,999 ($10,712.38)
The DJI Dock 2 and DJI Matrice 3D/T drones are currently not available in other markets. It remains to be seen if and when truly remote drone operations such as would be possible with the DJI Dock 2 and DJI Matrice 3D/T, will be allowed in the USA.
