Drones to Respond to 911 Calls in NYC

The NYPD is set to deploy drones across five precincts to aid officers in responding to 911 calls. This initiative aims to enhance response times and reach areas that officers cannot access quickly.

The NYPD’s fleet of 85 drones will be expanded under the new “Drones as First Responders” initiative. The drones will be stationed at three precincts in Brooklyn, one in the Bronx, and the Central Park precinct. They will reportedly be remotely piloted from One Police Plaza, monitored by a departmental attorney to prevent improper surveillance.

Adam Bry, Co-Founder and CEO of Skydio shared on Linkedin that he was “going from rooftop New York City Police Department Dock DFR installations down to underground subway tunnels for a Nightsense demo with NYPD Transit. Drones as First Responders Locations

The “Drones as First Responders” will be stationed at the following locations in New York City:

• 67th Brooklyn
• 71st Brooklyn
• 75th Brooklyn
• 48th Bronx
• Central Park

Speed and Accessibility

Drones equipped with infrared cameras can quickly reach locations that officers on foot or in vehicles cannot. This rapid response capability is crucial for serious crimes like shootings, stabbings, and robberies. NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Cass Daughtry highlighted the drones’ effectiveness in Search and Rescue operations and inspecting earthquake damage.

The deployment of drones is intended to keep New Yorkers safe, leveraging technology for better crowd control and emergency response. The initiative has sparked interest for its potential to provide unique aerial perspectives, such as views of Central Park from 200 feet high, showcasing both its beauty and the practical benefits of Drone Technology.
