Clarity on DJI Mini Drone RID Compliance

After DJI’s latest firmware updates, there had been some confusion regarding the Remote ID (RID) compliance of DJI’s Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro drones.
Pilot Institute spoke about the issue with DJI and learned the following.
The Heart of the Matter: Mini 4 Pro and Mini 3’s Compliance
The confusion stemmed from the RID compliance of the DJI Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro drones, particularly when operated with standard batteries.
Initially, there was a belief that these models were compliant with Part 107 operations under the RID regulations, a crucial aspect for commercial drone usage. The latest firmware release notes indicated this would no longer be the case once the drones were updated.
However, a detailed discussion between Pilot Institute representatives and DJI has shed light on this misunderstanding.
DJI clarified that the RID approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for these drone models are exclusively applicable when they are equipped with the larger capacity and heavier “plus” batteries.
When the DJI Mini 4 Pro and Mini 3 are operated with standard batteries, they do not meet the RID compliance requirements and, in fact, they never did.
The lack of a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for these configurations underscores this point.
Navigating Compliance: Options for Drone Operators
For drone operators, especially those involved in commercial work or conducting Part 107 operations, this clarification has practical implications.
To ensure compliance, operators of the DJI Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro have two primary options:
- Switching to Plus Batteries: By upgrading to the larger “plus” batteries, operators can automatically trigger the activation of RID in these mini drones, thus aligning with the required compliance.
- Using a RID Module: Alternatively, operators can choose to attach a RID module to their drones when using standard batteries. This addition will bring the drones into compliance with the necessary regulations.
